“La Vie En Rose”, Berlin Film Festival's opening film, is a captivating biopic of Edith Piaf, starring French actress Marion Cotillard, Sylvie Testud, and Gérard Depardieu. The film, a joint production of France, England, and the Czech Republic, is filled with Edith Piaf's enchanting music throughout its 140-minute runtime.

The film begins with Edith Piaf's (Marion Cotillard) concert scene in New York in 1959 and focuses on her life in her 40s. Born in 1915, Piaf traveled to many places from a young age thanks to her father's work in the circus. During those times, she earned money by singing on the streets with her closest friend Mômone (Sylvie Testud). It was during this time that she was discovered by Leplée (Gérard Depardieu), who owned a cabaret, and quickly entered the circle that would make her famous.

Cotillard, known from the film "A Very Long Engagement," portrays Piaf's youth and the period until her death at the age of 47 with great success. The film vividly portrays the process in which the illnesses and addictions she suffered at a young age transformed her into a 70-year-old woman at the age of 40, causing her to lose her ability to walk, speak, and sing.

The film also highlights the significant role of Marcel Cedan (Jean-Pierre Martins), a boxing champion with whom Piaf had a great love affair and who tragically died in a plane crash in 1949.
